HBO premiered a new series titled “Ballers” executive-produced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. This show reminds me of two previous HBO shows that I really enjoyed, “Arliss” and “Entourage”. The show does stand on his own by not quite being either one of the previous. It is a unique blend of both drama and comedy. The first episode shows you the glitz and glamour of the pro athlete’s life but even more so what happens after the athlete is no longer an active player. You have some characters using their connections with the league to further themselves. You have others who aren’t doing much of anything and end up as a car salesman at a local dealership. This proves to be an interesting concept but doesn’t ever commit to one genre. There are some familiar faces in the cast including Dwayne Johnson, Omar Benson Miller (8 Mile), Dulé Hill (Psych) and Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine). It is still too early to tell if HBO has another hit on their hands but The Color Commentary will keep an eye on the series.
